2025 Cross-Region Educational Activities Initiative

STEM Education for Sustainable Development:
Empowering Communities in Underserved Areas through Innovation

Introduction

Technologies and STEM knowledge empower people with the confidence and skills to tackle real-world challenges and become the next generation of innovators, fostering the growth of local communities in underserved areas. Promoting STEM education in these regions is crucial. Additionally, by supporting STEM education in underserved areas, IEEE can help create a more diverse pool of technically skilled individuals and address global social issues such as poverty, inequality, and lack of technological access. Aligned with President Kathleen Kramer’s “One IEEE” framework, Education Activities Committees from Regions 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10 have proposed this project to foster broader, more strategic, and more effective collaboration, with a special focus on empowering the next generation in underserved areas and communities.

With support from Regions over the years, Sections have organized various STEM education programs for the public and members. However, underserved areas face unique challenges in accessing technology, so this proposal aims to leverage our existing experience to organize education programs for underserved areas in Sections across Regions. To unify these efforts under a single theme—“STEM Education for Sustainable Development: Empowering Communities Through Innovation”. We also aim to connect local communities in underserved areas, such as schools, public libraries, and universities, to build a reputation as a trusted source of STEM education and development.

To strengthen coordination across Regions, the project will establish one core teaching module with localized education programs by Sections to fit local needs. We will also host a virtual “kick-off” session and a “debrief” to align volunteers on the central theme, highlight successful programs, and foster cross-regional networking. Localized programs can inspire and empower learners through AI, robotics, and other technologies. Some local events can be implemented in hybrid mode to allow more participants from other Regions to join. Besides the central component, the project will be implemented across Regions.
